Rafter installation is the most effective way to prevent radiant heat from getting into your attic.  This keeps your attic cooler and prevents radiant heat from penetrating through your ceiling. It will also keep you from losing radiant heat in the winter from escaping through your roof.  Rafter installation requires more material than attic floor installation. 

Attic Floor Installation

Attic floor installation is the most cost effective way to avoid losing heat from inside your home and it also keeps the radiant heat that builds up in your attic from radiating through your ceiling.  This is the least expensive method of providing the benefits of radiant barrier in cold or hot weather.  Attic floor installation requires less material for the same benefit.
